The Dwarf Did It...

Slayer by Kiersten White

“Into every generation a Slayer is born…

Nina and her twin sister, Artemis, are far from normal. It’s hard to be when you grow up at the Watcher’s Academy, which is a bit different from your average boarding school. Here teens are trained as guides for Slayers—girls gifted with supernatural strength to fight the forces of darkness. But while Nina’s mother is a prominent member of the Watcher’s Council, Nina has never embraced the violent Watcher lifestyle. Instead she follows her instincts to heal, carving out a place for herself as the school medic.

Until the day Nina’s life changes forever.

Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.

As Nina hones her skills with her Watcher-in-training, Leo, there’s plenty to keep her occupied: a monster fighting ring, a demon who eats happiness, a shadowy figure that keeps popping up in Nina’s dreams…

But it’s not until bodies start turning up that Nina’s new powers will truly be tested—because someone she loves might be next.

One thing is clear: Being Chosen is easy. Making choices is hard. ” ~ Cover synopsis from Goodreads

My Review

When I first heard that this book was coming out I fangirled HARD! Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my favorite show growing up. To this day I still watch reruns and collect Buffy merchandise. I have a Buffy gif for everything,,, Yeah I’m that person…. When I saw that this was the sequel / spinoff I have been waiting 20 years for I know I as going to have it, sooner rather than later.

I sent out emails and reached out to the people in charge of Slayer trying as hard as I could for an ARC. I was watching #booksfortrade willing to sell a kidney for this ARC. I never got my hands on one! But this was around the time #bookishwish appeared and was a big hit. I took a chance and put in a request for a pre-order of Slayer since it was coming out in my birthday month.

That’s how I got this book. It was an amazing birthday gift via #bookishwish from Matilda’s Library . (THANKS x10000000)

The book arrived in January right before my birthday trip and was the PERFECT companion for my trip. I had a Buffy 30th HAHA! Here are some pictures (the book went through 2 international airports and there was lots of Buffy birthday stuff lol) then I’ll tell you guys my thoughts on the story….

Over all I liked this book. I wished I loved the whole thing but I only really loved the second half. The beginning was a bit hard to get through.

Pros: This book was a great set up for a new series. IM SO GLAD THIS IS ONLY BOOK ONE! I like that the back story for these character corresponds with the Buffy series. I liked that Buffy even made an appearance in this book. Other old character favorites were discussed as well so there was instant connection to this story! And finally answers to the “what happened” after they pretty much blew Sunnydale off the map lol. I like that is all the POV of the Watchers. There was plenty of action and demons and endless research as always. I loved it. Stayed true to the Buffy universe. The Leo/Nina thing at the end…… I need to go watch the ending of Buffy season two…

Cons: The beginning of this book was a bit slow. At first I didn’t like any of the characters during the first half of the book. I was afraid I was going to “DNF” and forever have a gaping hole in my heart. The way EVERYONE treated Nina made me want to smack some of them off the page. Worse than Cordelia and Harmony sometimes! Festering feelings and assumptions will do that though. I’m glad these characters let it all out so now they can move on and grow.

In the end, I am giving this book the stamp of fandom approval! I can not wait for the next book. I need to know what happens next. There is always another apocalypse right around the corner. I also really hope Doug makes it to a Coldplay concert.

Have you read this book? Drop a comment! Love the Buffy universe? Drop a comment! Let’s discuss this!

If you haven’t read this book or any of Kiersten White’s other books check them out! I love what she does to old favorites and makes them come back to life in a whole new light!
