The Dwarf Did It...

My Plain Jane

My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)

Or does she?

Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.

My Review

I originally got this book in one of my OwlCrates a few months back but since it has to do with ghosts I saved it for my October TBR. Mine has a slightly different cover, a note from the authors, and is signed by all three authors. Just three of the MANY reasons I love OwlCrate. (If interested in this click here  >> Owl Crate Link <<  Now back to my book review).

So this book was a wild ride. Half of the time I was laughing out loud for real and the other half I was like “What the f**k is going on?”. There was a lot of awesome book and pop culture references. The sarcasm of the character was GREAT! This book was NOTHING like I was expecting. I never read the first in the series My Lady Jane so I didn’t really know what I was getting into. (Note: This might be “book two” but they are read as a standalone). For a while there, I was wondering to myself, why am I reading this nonsense? Let me just tell you now… I laughed… A LOT!

All of the characters are very likable. Even Mr. Rochester in his um….. altered state. He was so weird! This was a 100% original twist on a classic story with some twists you might see coming. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did.

It turned out to be a fantastic collaboration between these authors. Before I knew it, the book was over and I had to exist this roller coaster. This book was soo much fun! I will be ordering the first book in this series VERY VERY soon! (ok this is a lie….. maybe once my TBR pile is at a manageable size but it is on my to do!)

This was a perfect Halloween read. Even being comical there are plenty of ghosts to keep you in the spooky spirit. I’m giving it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Pick up a copy! It won’t be for everyone but it is definitely worth a try!
