The Dwarf Did It...

The Last Magician

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

“Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.” ~Description from Goodreads

My Review

The book was an adventure for me before I even read a single page. I had originally won The Devil’s Thief off of a Goodreads giveaway and I was pretty excited. Never heard of Lisa Maxwell before, book sounded great, all would be awesome! Well, when The Devil’s Thief arrived I was a bit disappointed that it was a SEQUEL and I didn’t realize it.

The Book Gods had to have been smiling upon me that day because #bookishwish was super active that day and I found a pre-loved ARC of The Last Magician and got it mailed to my house (THX BOOK FAIRY!). The Last Magician arrived a week later and I got myself ready to read! So of course, like every bookworm out there, as soon as I sat down to read this book I popped on Twitter for a “second” to see all the bookish new new’s.

I stumbled upon a Lisa Maxwell post advertising a month-long read along for The Last Magician, going from September 1st to October 8th, leading up to the release of The Devil’s Thief complete with daily swag prizes. Soooo… of course I put the book aside and waited another week or two to start it.

I love this book. I love this series. I love Lisa Maxwell’s story telling SO MUCH I have already put Unhooked on my TBR-ASAP list. (PIRATES! HELLO!)

This story totally reminded me of Gangs of New York but with MAGIC and TIME TRAVEL. It was such a fun read. Every single character is likable in their own way so it is really hard to pick just one. If I had to though Harte is the best character. The whole plot to this story made it extremely hard to put down. I struggled not to read ahead in this read along (I did plow through the end of the book the SECOND we hit this last week to do it though). Speaking of the end…. Pardon my language for a sec…… HOLY FUCKING SHIT!! I’m going to say right now the last 50 or so pages of this book was AWESOME! I was NOT expecting that plot twist at all. I knew something was up but the actuality of what it was blew my mind! I read those page with my mouth hanging open. My husband thought I was having a stroke or something. He is reading this book too, but he is only at the half way point and I screamed at him FINISH THIS NOW! I NEED TO TALK ABOUT WHAT JUST HAPPENED!

Everything about this book is amazing. Characters, setting, plot, story telling, THE COVER! This book is getting a 5 star rating from me 100% and I’ll be diving into my ARC of The Devil’s Thief very very very soon.
